I knitted Jack Skellington.

View or Print this FREE PATTERN as a PDF

Jack & Barbie.

NOW YOU CAN TOO!!!

Materials:
Worsted weight yarn*, 1 ball black, 1 ball white. (I used Red Heart)
Size US7 needles *
Polyester stuffing
Black Felt
Black embroidery thead & needle
Sewing needle

This project is small enough, you could easily use leftover yarn from another project. . .
*Yarn weight and needle size are open to your own interpretation. . .

Revised: 4-12-07, using the Knit 1, front & back increase. (K1 f & b)
LINK TO VIDEO - from KnittingHelp.com

HEAD:
With white yarn, CO 9 sts.
Row 1 and every ODD row: P.
Row 2: K1 f & b, across
Row 4: *K1, K1 f & b - repeat from * to end.
Row 6: K2, K1 f & b, (K4, K1 f & b) 4 times, K4

Work 9 rows in St st.

Row 16: K2, *K2tog, K4; repeat from * to end.
Row 18: *K1, K2tog; repeat from * to end.
Row 20: K2tog, repeat to end.

Cut yarn, leaving a 12" long tail. Draw tail through remaining stitches, use tail to mattress stitch the head closed stopping halfway to fill with stuffing.

Eyes: Cut out 2 small teardrop shapes of felt, sew (or glue, if preferred) to the head.
Nose & Mouth: Use embroidery thread to "free hand" the nose and mouth. The design is REALLY easy. . . I used this picture as a point of reference.

BODY:
(make 2 and sew together)
With Black yarn, CO 18 sts.
St st for 8 rows.
Row 9: K1, K2tog, K to last 3 sts, ssk, K1 (16 sts.)
Row 10:P
Row 11: K
Row 12: P
Rows 13 - 16: (repeat rows 9-12) (14 sts.)
Row 17: (repeat row 9) (12 sts)
Row 18: P
Rows 19-22: (repeat row 9-12) (10 sts.)
Bind off, mattress stitch 2 together, stopping 1" from end to stuff.

ARMS: I-cord for 6 inches, sew to the sides of the body, on the wider end.

LEGS: I-cord for 8 inches, sew to bottom of body, on the narrow end.

Jack sew

It's hard to see in the photo, but Jack has a large "collar", to make it, I cut out a star shape from felt and sewed it to the bottom of Jack's head, sandwiched between the head and body. Sew head to the body, and you have your very own JACK SKELLINGTON!!!!!!

I thought of a few fun variations:

Jack Skellington "mirror dice": Make 2 heads, sew 2 ends of 18 inch I-cord to the top of the head. . .voila!

Super Poseable Jack Skellington: push black "pipe cleaners", between stitches, into I-cord arms & legs, bend and shape as you please. . (I tried this with the worsted weight yarn and the pipe cleaners kept poking through, it might work better with a smaller gauge yarn.)

How many stitches did you cast on to do your i-cords for the arms and legs ? I tried 4 stitches, but that looks kinda thin.

sunshyne said...

I just did a 3 stitch I-cord, but it's totally open to re-interpretation. . Jack's pretty thin, so I figured 3 was safe, I hope you like the pattern!

I could be off my rocker, but how are you making 1 at the end of the row? Are you really making 1 (picking up the piece between 2 sts and knitting it) or are you using another increase method. I can't figure it out. It must be something I'm doing.

Thank you for this pattern, BTW!

Sunshyne said...

Hey Tina! glad you like my pattern -thanks...

For the increase, I used a KF&B stitch like THIS

Tina said...

Thank you! That is what I ended up doing. I was under the impression m1 was a certain stitch. Forgive me, I'm a beginner! LOL

My son will love Jack but I'm having trouble when it comes to row 6 of the head. I only have 17 stitches at the end of row 5 but on row 6 it tells me to (K5, m1)4 times. I don't have enough stitches to do this 4 times. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I've made my increases in the previous rows. I feel so stoopid! Help!

Sorry everybody!! It's been so long since I've looked over the pattern, I never noticed how confusing the head increases were... I did a test run - sure enough, I was confused myself... so I revised that part of the pattern. I also used a size 6 needle and got a tighter fabric, I think I'll try another Jack and get some new pictures.

Leslie- Try the new version of the head and see if it works better..??

Aha! Now I get it. Thanks Sunshyne, for the revised pattern. I can't wait to finish it for my son. :)

This is just too cool. I've never tried anything like this before and have been working on the head all morning. It's making me learn a lot.

Thank you!~

This is a really cool pattern. I just made myself one this weekend and using the same pattern with different colored yarn and felt (and extra felt to make a dress), I made a matching Sally doll too. I posted a picture of the two of them on deviantART if you wanna see them. Thank you so much! ^^

LOVE your Jack Skellington!! :)

I saw a link to it on the Ravelry "Nightmare Before Christmas Group". Someone else created a Zero pattern. Now I can have them both!
